The above is the headline from a November 5, 2009 article on WebMD. The article, by Kathleen Doheny starts by saying, “The popular pain and fever reliever acetaminophen may be linked with an increased risk of asthma in children and adults, according to a new research review of previously published studies by Canadian researchers.”

The research mentioned in the article was performed in Canada and was led by scientists at the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. The study was published in the November 1, 2009 issue of the journal Chest. The findings confirmed that use of acetaminophen (generic name for Tylenol) by children and adults is associated with the development of asthma and wheezing.

Researchers reviewed 19 previously performed studies involving 425,000 subjects and they found that the risk of asthma increases by 60 per cent in those children given acetaminophen sometime in the prior year. In adults the risk of developing asthma in the following year of using acetaminophen was 75 per cent higher than those who do not use the popular pain killer.

Although the makers of Tylenol deny any link the authors point out that they found a relationship in dosage so that those who took less Tylenol had less of a chance of developing asthma, while those who took larger amounts were more likely to develop asthma.

In an article on November 9, 2009 in the Vancouver Sun, co-author Dr. Mark FitzGerald, a professor of respiratory medicine at University of British Columbia, noted that starting about 20 years ago doctors started recommending aspirin less and Tylenol more for children. He notes the correlation by saying, “There was a change in practice and in the succeeding 20 years or so the prevalence of asthma has increased also.”

Mahyar Etminan, co-author do the study and assistant professor of medicine at UBC and researcher at VCHRIs Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation, added, “

From the May 8th, 2006, issue of the Ventura County Star comes an interesting article on rodeo cowboys and chiropractic. The article starts off by reviewing the harsh incidents rodeo cowboys endure. The article describes how they get tossed around on the back of an angry 1,800-pound bull, they leap off a galloping horse, many times into the spiky horns of a charging steer. Often they get hurt and then pick themselves up, dust themselves off and endure the pain.

The article continues and notes that even the roughest, toughest cowboys need help. That’s when they mosey over to the Pro-Sport Chiropractic tent to get some TLC and Chiropractic care. At the the Conejo Valley Days rodeo, the cowboys would slip just beyond the spectators site into a tent where they would get adjusted.

A local chiropractor who cares for the cowboys, Dr. Terry Weyman said, “I’ve seen guys with noses splayed open, and they still talk to you like nothing is wrong. It’s the world’s roughest sport, bull riding. If you can handle these guys, you can handle anybody.”

The article goes onto say that every time ProSport Chiropractic sets up a tent at professional rodeos around the country, the cowboys come to get care. One rodeo cowboy, bull wrestler Kevin McKinney noted in the article that his pain was a “nine” on a scale of one to ten. “I’m hurting,” was his comment as he came into the tent for care.

McKinney’s wife, Tammy, who was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Every girl loves a dirty cowboy,” agreed that he must be hurting if he says anything. She added, “He’ll ride if he’s hurt. That’s how much he loves it.” After getting evaluated and receiving chiropractic care, McKinney walked away. Then, referring to his aches and pain, he commented, “It’s always worth it.”

Researchers report in the July 2001 issue of American Journal of Public Health that men in their 30s who jog at least nine times a month develop a bone density that is at least 5 percent higher than that of men who jog less. The study analyzed answers to questions in a health survey of 4,254 men, including 954 joggers and 3,300 who did not jog. The study included results of hip bone X-rays taken of each of the men to determine bone density. The researchers compared the findings from joggers with results from non-joggers.

Dr. Michael E. Mussolino, a researcher at the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention office in Hyattesville, Md. said the results showed, “The men who were jogging nine times a month were doing much better than those who were jogging only one to eight times a month,’ said Mussolino. “Even those who jogged eight or fewer times a month had a higher bone density than those who did not jog at all.” He also stated that the study shows that it does not require marathon-like running to build strong bones. “This shows that just a casual frequency of jogging is beneficial.”

The National Institutes of Health estimates that about 10 million Americans now have osteoporosis and another 18 million are at risk of the disease due to low bone density. Eighty percent of these people are women. It is estimated that one out of every two women and one in eight men will break a bone as the result of osteoporosis within their lifetime. The report states that building dense strong bones in young adulthood is considered by experts to be an important hedge against osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease that generally develops in later years.

The above headline appeared on the October 1, 2004, “Newswise”, and the October 6, 2004 “News-Medical.net”. These news stories stemmed from a published report appearing in the September 20, 2004 issue of the peer-reviewed periodical, “Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research” Anxiety(JVSR). The report was a case study of a 19-year old female diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) who suffered from psychiatric symptoms as well as other problems for two years.

This case study noted that this patient’s previous medical treatment had included multiple emergency room visits; private specialists; and a rotation of drug therapies including Paxil, Xanax, and Celexa all of which had failed to help her. The patient’s history also included at least three motor vehicle accidents between 1995 and 1997, including one where her head shattered the windshield.

The articles note that according to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety is the most common mental health illness. It affects more than 19 million Americans ages 18-54. Patients suffering from General Anxiety Disorder make three to five times more visits to doctors’ offices and emergency rooms and the Anxiety Disorders Association of America reports that direct healthcare costs and lost productivity of these conditions cost more than $42 billion per year.

In December, 2001, the patient started chiropractic care for correction of nerve interference called “subluxations”. This patient’s results were then documented over a four month course of care. It was observed that medication was discontinued successfully. Additionally, the articles noted that after a four-month course of chiropractic care, the young woman reported an 80% reduction in her anxiety symptoms, including a 90% decrease in her headaches. The patient was able to resume a normal lifestyle without resorting to prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

The research was co-authored by Dr. Madeline Behrendt, Associate Editor of JVSR, and Dr. Nathan Olsen, a chiropractor in private practice in Boise, Idaho. They noted in their conclusion that, “These improvements suggest positive changes in mental health function may be associated with subluxation correction from the application of chiropractic care.”

Dr. Behrendt additionally commented, “This young woman spent two years in crisis, going from emergency room to private specialist, spending thousands of dollars for tests and drug therapy, without any resolution of her problems. A simple, non-invasive spinal screening ultimately provided the findings that made the difference: her spine was subluxated, impinging on nerves, and altering the proper function of her nervous system.” Behrendt continued by asking, “How many other people are suffering unnecessarily because they are missing the proper screening?”

The July 14, 2006 issue of the Psychology Today Online carried a story with the subtitle ” Beating addiction may take an extra nudge from the chiropractor.” This article, in a mainstream psychological publication, starts off by following the success story of one individual enrolled in the Exodus addiction treatment center of South Florida. The article notes that this center has a much higher rate of success in addiction treatment than the national average for such centers.

When this one patient was asked what he attributed his success to he noted, “I think that chiropractic care was an integral part of my recovery.” The Exodus center adds chiropractic care to the normal treatment of addiction. The article then asks, “But what does the spine have to do with addiction?” The connection is explained by the effect chiropractic care has on the nervous system and brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that under chiropractic care are released in a specific sequence and a state of well-being.

The article notes that “subluxations” interfere with normal nerve transmission and therefore interfere with the normal chemical sequence. Chiropractic care is designed to correct subluxations, return normal nerve functions and therefore allow the chemical sequence to return to normal.

The article recalls a study, previously published in the scientific journal Molecular Psychiatry, that proves the reasoning behind the success seen at Exodus. In the original study, 98 subjects enrolled in the Exodus program for addiction treatment received frequent chiropractic adjustments over a 30-day period. These subjects were compared to two other groups of patients who did not receive chiropractic. One group called the passive group, underwent only standard rehabilitation, and another, a placebo group, received sham chiropractic care.

The national average for completion of addiction programs is about 55 percent. In the study noted above the two non-chiropractic groups had completion rates similar to the national average. However, the patients in the group that received chiropractic care displayed an unprecedented 100 percent program completion rate.

Dr. Jay Holder (pictured right) of the Exodus center stressed in the article that chiropractic care does not represent a new form of treatment for addiction. He noted that chiropractic helps patients use existing treatment more thoroughly.

This is a subject nobody likes discussing. Dr. G. Gutmann, a German medical researcher, however, discovered that over 80% of the infants he examined shortly after birth were suffering from injury to the cervical spine, the neck, causing all types of health problems.

Traumatic Birth Syndrome is not a new condition. A researcher by the name of Duncan, measured the amount of force it would take to severely injure a baby’s neck during delivery. He found that 90 pounds of force was enough to cause still birth, while less than that would cause the spinal joints to sprain. Duncan commented, “this is not what most obstetricians would consider a great force.”

Dr. Abraham Towbin, from Harvard Medical School and the Department of Pathology, presented research at the Eighteenth Annual Meeting of the American Academy For Cerebral Palsy. In his research, he found that “the birth process, even under optimal conditions, is potentially a traumatic, crippling event for the fetus.”

“Spinal cord and brain stem injuries occur often during the process of birth but frequently escape diagnosis.” Dr. Towbin continues, “death may occur during delivery or, with respiratory function depressed, a short period after birth. Infants who survive the initial effects, may be left with severe nervous system defects.”

What about the babies that don’t show immediate signs and symptoms of Traumatic BirthSyndrome? What if the signs and symptoms don’t appear until later on in life? What is the effect on that infant? How does it interfere with that babies potential to express itself completely and wholly as a human being? What kind of symptoms and diseases could it cause later on in life?

The neck is an area of the body where you can not afford to have an injury remain uncorrected. Since injuries here can affect the brain stem, all the vital functions of the body are inhibited. This can occur whether there are symptoms or not.

Do you remember what happened to Christopher Reeve, the actor who played Superman in the movies? He was riding his horse and fell forward on his head, breaking a bone in his upper neck.

In an interview he did with Barbara Walters, you could see that he was unable to breathe without the use of a ventilator machine. He also was unable to control his elimination system. Many of his other body functions were altered as well.

“Wait a minute, how could this be”, you might ask.” He didn’t hurt his lungs, his bowel, or his bladder, he hurt his neck.”

This is precisely the point. When the neck is injured, the entire body is affected. Similarly, when there is an injury to another part of the spine, the organs and systems supplied by those nerves become dysfunctional. These spinal injuries, called the vertebral subluxation complex, can alter the course of a persons life if they are not immediately corrected.

Several patients come to mind to illustrate these points. One woman had a full term pregnancy and her baby was fatally injured from the birth process. This is the most severe affect of birth trauma. Thankfully she was able to get pregnant again and deliver a beautiful baby boy. You can be sure this child receives chiropractic care.

Another patient, a 5 year old child whose birth was a very traumatic C-section, never had a properly functioning bladder. Her father, who was an eye witness to the traumatic delivery, described how his baby’s lower spine was twisted during the birth.

After just a month of Chiropractic care, the parents were amazed at their child’s improvement. They are now committed to Chiropractic Wellness Care as a way to maximize their families health potential.

A third patient that comes to mind is a woman who attended a Chiropractic Orientation one evening after learning about the importance of Chiropractic from her husband.

After learning about the condition responsible for “Traumatic birth Syndrome, the vertebral subluxation complex, she began to ask some serious questions about her own health.

Jeannie Cavallo Martin of Marietta, GA, said that when she was born, her mother told her she had bruises on her neck. She asked if there could be any connection between those nerves and her thyroid gland. When Jeannie saw the nerve connection to the thyroid gland from the part of her neck that was bruised at birth, her mouth dropped wide open in shock. She said, “that’s probably why I developed thyroid cancer when I was 26 years old.” This is a critical realization people! “Why didn’t somebody tell my mother about Chiropractic?” she asked.

Another Chiropractic patient who began care for a herniated disk in his neck, indicated that when he was 22 years old, he had his gall bladder removed. He didn’t understand why his gall bladder had failed at such a young age. The doctors didn’t know either. When he saw his Xrays for the first time, he noticed a huge kink in the bones between his shoulders. He immediately said, “what in the world is that, I don’t have any pain there!” He was also surprised to learn that this was the area of his spine where the nerve supply went to his gall bladder. He wished someone would have told him about Chiropractic Wellness Care also. He might still have his gall bladder. His birth was a forceps delivery!

My Chiropractic colleagues around the world all agree that we would much rather examine and adjust a newborn baby for the vertebral subluxation complex than do an autopsy. We would much rather adjust a newborn baby than wait 26 years and learn about young people having cancer or gall bladder disease in areas where their nerve systems had been injured and compromised since birth.

The human body was designed to function as a well oiled machine until the ripe old age of at least 100. There are people who are living to be 100 years old in various parts of the world and they are functioning absolutely fine.

Traumatic Birth Syndrome, whether it causes symptoms immediately or just diminishes human potential over the course of a lifetime, must be dealt with and dealt with immediately.

Don’t be fooled if your medical doctor says your baby is fine. Medical doctors get little to no training in the detection and correction of the vertebral subluxation complex and will almost certainly miss it.

Chiropractors, on the other hand, have been detecting and correcting Birth Trauma Syndrome and the Vertebral Subluxation Complex for over a 100 years through a simple and gentle exam.

All children should be examined by a Chiropractor immediately after birth. Take this critical step to ensure that your children are as healthy as they are designed to be.

This is a representation of one type of subluxation. A subluxation, as defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges is: “A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health.” When a subluxation occurs it causes nerve interference in some portion of the body affected by those nerves. The subluxation causes changes to the structure as well as the nerves. These changes get progressively worse as time is allowed to work on the subluxated area of the spine. These changes take the form of ongoing degeneration known as “subluxation degeneration”. By understanding the type and amount of changes, it is possible to reasonably estimate the time subluxations have been present in a spine. Having this information is useful in understanding the time and effort needed for correction.

Near Normal

This is a side x-ray view of the neck. As with all the pictures you will see on this page, the patient is looking to the right of the screen, so you are viewing the right side of their neck. We will call this picture a “near normal” spine. Compare this spine with the ones you will see below on this page. Notice the normal forward curve of the neck. This curve helps absorb shock. Notice how each of the disc spaces between C2 (second bone in neck) and C7 are thick and even, this again is normal. Also notice how the front portions (right on the x-ray) of each of the vertebrae (called the ‘body’ of the vertebrae) are fairly square with clear and well defined borders. This type of arrangement is normal in the neck. Normal vertebrae in other parts of the spine also have similar characteristics to what we see here. When subluxations occur and are left uncorrected, ongoing relentless changes occur that result in damage to the structure and function of the spine along with nerve damage and the resulting problems caused from improper nerve supply.

Phase One Subluxation Degeneration

Phase One Subluxation Degeneration is seen in subluxations that have been present for up to twenty years. This phase is characterized with a loss or change in the normal curve in the spine. On this example you can see that the normal forward (lordotic) curve is lost. This spine even has developed a reverse curve in the neck. The disc spaces have also begun to exhibit a slight change in shape. One good point is that the bodies of each of the vertebrae (the square part in front) still exhibits clean clear borders. Segmental motion may be abnormal but overall motion is probably not affected. Chiropractic reconstructive care for a phase one can take from 6 to 18 months. More than 80% of people with Phase One Subluxation Degeneration have no pain. Therefore, if left uncorrected, phase one continues to progress with time until it eventually reaches the next phase.

Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration

Phase two subluxation degeneration is normally seen in subluxations that have been present between 20 and 40 years. This phase has some of the same characteristics of the previous phase including a loss of normal curvature and position as well as an alteration in segmental motion. In addition, spines with Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration many times show a reduction in the patient’s range of motion in that area. X-rays of a phase two begin to show calcium changes or buildup at certain levels of the spine. These changes are sometimes called by many names including spurs and arthritis. Disc spaces between the affected vertebrae are noticeably narrower and may appear to be flattening out. Although most people with Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration may not exhibit any symptoms, some may start to feel stiff or achy. Chiropractic reconstructive care for patients in phase two ranges from 1.5 years to 2.5 years. Again, if Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration is left uncorrected it slowly advances to the next phase.

Phase Three Subluxation Degeneration

Phase Three Subluxation Degeneration is caused by subluxations that have been continuing on for between 40 and 65 years. This phase has all of the attributes of the previous phases, only worse. The curvatures are abnormal, the disc spaces are vastly decreased and changed. Calcium changes on the spine are abundant in this phase. Normally, people in phase three have a restricted range of motion and probably exhibit symptoms of some kind. In phase three the vertebrae show obvious changes and mutations in shape. Projections made of calcium, sometimes referred to as “spurs or lipping”, can be readily seen on x-ray. Chiropractic reconstructive care for patients in phase three ranges from 2.5 years to 3.5 years. This does not mean that at the end of this time that any or all of the calcium changes will be gone. In many instances the body adapts to the presence of the calcium and positive changes can only be measured from a functional standpoint. As before, if Phase Three Subluxation Degeneration is left unchecked it slowly advances onward into the next phase.

Phase Four Subluxation Degeneration

Phase four subluxation degeneration is seen with subluxations that have been raging on uncorrected or altered for over sixty five years. Phase four is a grave condition that will negatively affect the patients longevity and quality of life. The massive amount of neurological damage caused by years of subluxation that have lead to phase four are probably taking a serious toll on this person’s health status. X-rays in phase four show serious severe structural changes. Vertebrae exhibit massive calcium changes, disc spaces appear blurred, and the bones themselves appear fused. In this scenario the patient will have a severe restriction of range of motion in addition to probably a number of other health issues. Reconstruction may not be possible in phase four, but care can be directed to some reduction in subluxation with the goal of improvement in the quality of life remaining. Patients in Phase Four Subluxation Degeneration have a serious situation both structurally and neurologically, but they are certainly not beyond hope. Many patients in phase four report significant improvements in symptoms, conditions, mobility and quality of life.

It should be noted that the above are common guidelines and not hard rules. Every person is dynamic and different. People degenerate at different rates and heal at different rates. The further along your spine may be with subluxation degeneration the more strenuous and time consuming your road to improvement will be. For this reason we always stress early care to stop and prevent the advancement of subluxation degeneration. Of course, if you’re not under chiropractic care, the best time to start is NOW!

June 30, 2005 report from the Seattle Times reports that a large portion of doctors diagnoses may well be influenced by large drug companies looking to improve their bottom line. The expose, authored by Susan Kelleher and Duff Wilson points out that many of the criteria used for making a diagnosis have been changed in order to classify more healthy people as sick, and therefore sell more medication.

The article notes that researchers at Dartmouth Medical School estimate that during the 1990s, tens of millions more Americans were classified as having hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes or obesity simply because the definitions of those diseases were changed. The Seattle Times article uncovered that the experts writing the treatment guidelines that for a broad spectrum of diseases had drug-company ties ranging from research contracts to consultancies to stock ownership.

The result of this drug industry promoted disease reclassification is that tens of millions more Americans were classified as having hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes or obesity during the 1990s, simply because the definitions of those diseases were changed. The net results are huge increases in sales of prescription drugs, overall soaring health-care costs, escalating patient anxiety, as well as millions of people taking drugs that may carry a greater health risk than the underlying condition they were prescribed for.

The article notes that currently, due to the expanded diagnosis parameters, three out of four Americans technically have at least one of the commonly medicated diseases. But millions of them are not truly sick and may never be, even without medication. Dr. John Kitzhaber of The Foundation for Medical Excellence in Portland, who was also Oregon’s governor from 1995 to 2003 stated, “We have a system that nobody but Big Pharma is happy with.”

Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, a Dartmouth medical professor and editor of Effective Clinical Practice, a journal of the American College of Physicians, voiced his concern that more healthy people are being classified as sick only to increase drug sales. He commented, “You can’t tell me that three-quarters of my population is sick before I start. That just doesn’t pass the laugh test.” Welch continued, “Our business is in a hard place right now. A lot of docs know it’s not right.”

Sleep is important to a lot of things in your life. Make sure you read this and share it with your friends.

Without the daily restorative process of a good nights sleep, life takes on a raw edge–a feeling that millions know all too well.

Chiropractic have proven effective in helping sleep disorders and helping people with a better night’s sleep.

Traditional Chiropractic and Chiropractic Neurology

This is what really happens. Sleep disorders are prevalent and often disabling, but most are effectively treatable using chiropractic.

Sleep is one of the most important functions of your brain. The ability of your nervous system to regulate what’s going on around you is considered a prerequisite to good, natural sleep. If you’re aware of everything little thing, you’re not going to get a good nights sleep.

Specific areas of your brain ‘change’ in their function to prevent it from sending information that might keep you awake. An example of that would be a patient suffering from pain or other health conditions that produce a continual activation of their brain and therefore they would have difficulty sleeping. This happens a lot.

If you have insomnia or just can’t sleep, you need to address this problem because it will affect the central state of your brain and then you won’t be able to sleep like you should.

When helping sleep disorders, we take a closer look at different areas of your brain that are specific for sleep cycles and brain activity. We evaluate your nervous system, and all the feedback loops that affect the area of your brain that can control your sleep-wake cycles. We do this by ADJUSTING specific areas of your neck and spine.

We also look at what we can do therapeutically to increase or decrease activation of specific areas of your brain that are NOT functioning at optimal levels by using specific chiropractic adjustments to remove any interference in your spine. It’s a feedback system and we give your brain the feedback it needs to help you sleep restfully.

Don’t forget. As you get older, different parts of your brain are affected. Those areas also tend to deteriorate with a decrease in adequate circulation. When this happens you start to experience not only insomnia, but also mental changes in general, such as loss of the ability to solve problems and an increase in anxiety or depression.

Make sure you adjusted regularly and checked regularly to take care of these interferences. Chiropractic is an important part of you staying healthy for a long, long time. Call the office today.
